FAQ - Transmission

What Are Transmission Problem Symptoms?

Are you having a problem with your transmission and wonder if it could just be low on transmission fluid? Here are some the problem signs the specialists at our transmission shop in Lincoln will look for.

Transmission Slippage: If your transmission has sudden up and down shifts, spikes in RPM's before shifting, strange grinding noises, or erratic shifting, these are all characteristics of transmission slipping problem. These also indicate a risk of overheating. This is usually a sign that friction materials within the transmission are not able to fully engage and are at risk of significant damage.

Gear Engagement Delay: When you are low on transmission fluid you will experience a noticeable pause (usually 2-3 seconds) when shifting into drive or reverse. This occurs because there is not enough transmission fluid to create the hydraulic line pressure needed to initiate a change

Unable to Shift: When a transmission’s fluid is nearly empty, your car or truck will not shift at all. Filling the transmission with the correct amount of fluid will normally at least temporarily fix the problem. However, you still need to have the issue diagnosed and find out where the fluid was lost.

Abnormal Shifting: You normally know if your vehicle shifts are irregular, delayed, sped up, or slamming. The lack of transmission fluid will cause inconsistency with both shift timing and smoothness.

Overheating Transmission: When experiencing a loss of power, smoke coming from your vehicle, a burning smell, or erratic shifts you should pull over immediately. These may be signs that your transmission has overheated due to lack of fluid. If you continue driving with these issues, internal damage is likely.

Transmission Failure: If you have experienced any of the above symptoms from low fluid, and if they continue even after the fluid is filled, you are most likely at the point of needing a replacement transmission from the team at our transmission shop in Lincoln.
